A little bit about us
Following Judo Paul’s experiences with the GB team and his training in Japan, Judo Paul founded the club in 1999.
The club has produced six national medallists since being founded, the latest being Shelly Ludford, who has made club history by being the youngest national medallist in the club at twelve years old and also being the first gold national medallist. This is a great achievement for Shelly and still competing around the world to this day.
Over the years the club has been very successful as a competing team, winning the Basingstoke League for three years, then went on to win the Hampshire league representing Basingstoke in the Hampshire finals.
The club won the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Games three years in a row, and also won the inter club championships held Camberley Judo Club, beating my old club Camberley Judo club. This event was won three years in a row.
Amongst its achievements the club has produced fifteen black belts with five players achieving their belts in a line up.
After the success of his Paul Jones School of Judo club, Judo Paul set up Southern Schools Judo in 2003 teaching Judo in Private and State Schools across London and the South of England. Currently, teaching an average of 500 children a week. Judo Paul continues to teach at some of the schools he started with in 2003.
Head coach – Judo Paul – Paul Jones.
Judo Paul started judo at eight years old at Basingstoke Judo Club (BJC) with coach John Gowland, training at the club until he was 21 years old.
After leaving BJC and a break of a couple of years, he started training with the British Team at Camberley Judo Club with Olympic coach Mark Earl. Within 6 months started full-time training with the British Team. Judo Paul went on to achieve his black belt and being selected to represent Great Britain as part of the squad to compete in the Guido Sieni Trophy. Following his success, he was selected for the Tre Torri International tournament.
Judo Paul competed for the Great Britain team for 5 years. One of the tournaments he took part in was the Trofeo International Tournament held in Naples where the team won the Gold Cup, beating Cuba, Brazil, and Italy to take the title.
Personally, he came 5th in the British Closed Championships and 7th in British Open Championships.
After leaving full-time training Judo Paul gained 7th place in the World Masters Judo Championships in Japan and had the opportunity to train at the Tokai University with Yasuhiro Yamashita and Nobuyuki Sato (the two most famous Japanese judo players in the world) and the rest of the Japanese squad.
